Steps to maintain the lawn

Once prepared and sown, the land is ready to receive the seeds of grasses. To obtain and keep a beautiful lawn, it is necessary to maintain it all year round. Here are the five essential steps in turf maintenance.

Scarification

Scarification is an important step for turf maintenance. It removes the thick, opaque and impervious felting that forms on the green expanse and robs the grasses of light, possible nutrients and rain.

In addition, mosses and fungi can grow and cause disease

Plant growth is greatly slowed down and grass becomes yellow. It is therefore important to scarify the grass to remedy these problems and restart the development of grasses. Scarification must be undertaken twice a year  once in the spring, after the last frosts, and once in the fall , before the first frosts.

Scarification methods

There are 3 methods of scarification. Manual scarifier, the grass scarification is done with a simple scarifier or on wheels.Electric scarifier, scarification is done with a tool close to a traditional lawnmower but equipped with knives, a comb or claws instead of a blade. As a scarifier, the scarifier used is similar to the previous one, but it runs on gasoline because it is intended for larger areas.

Liming

After autumn scarification, it is necessary to undertake liming work. Liming can be used to correct a pH of the soil that is too acidic by making a calcium modification made of lime. This operation favors the action of fertilizers and the development of microorganisms, helps rooting of grasses and limits the appearance of spontaneous grasses.

Fertilizer inputs

To keep the turf in good shape and quality, the fertilizer input must be regular. It is important to ensure that the chosen turf fertilizer meets specific needs that vary with the seasons. In the spring, choose a fertilizer rich in nitrogen to help the grass to resume growth in the fall , choose a fertilizer rich in phosphorus and potassiumonce a season, except July and August , apply a slowacting fertilizer that releases the necessary nutrients to the grass as needed.

Watering the lawn

Manual watering, it is done using a watering can or a garden hose.Watering irrigation, it requires the development of a network of pipes connected to a water inlet and buried before cultivation.Sprinkler watering, it requires the installation of guns and turnstiles connected to the water network.
